Every year, Portland State University’s civil engineering students compete in the American Society of Civil Engineering (ASCE) National Student Steel Bridge Competition. This competition challenges students to design, fabricate, and construct a one-tenth scale steel bridge. The challenge is to come up with the most efficient design that meets strict structural specifications. The model is then tested for weight, style, strength, and ability to resist deflection, among other things.
The Steel Bridge Competition affords PSU’s civil engineering students an opportunity to exercise valuable skills: applying real-world engineering principles; gaining hands-on knowledge of the design and fabrication process; networking; and competing against rival colleges. Future engineers are offered a chance to practice solving common engineering issues related to project management, cost, safety, aesthetics, special constraints, material properties, and serviceability.
